“An Independent Review of James Hogan's "Become an English Language Conversation Tutor" eBook”
How would you like to help foreign students improve their English? Does learning about other cultures and language interest you?
Back in the mid 90's, I was attending CSU Fresno as an engineering student. Being an engineering student, I was mostly interested in math, science, and computers. The subject of "English" was something of little interest to me.
I ended up taking a few Japanese language classes to broaden my horizons. Even since high school, I really found other cultures interesting.
Out of all the courses I've taken, Japanese was the most enjoyable one. Even though it's a tough language to learn, meeting a variety of students with various interests, besides engineering, made the time enjoyable.
I wanted to find out more about the culture. I ended up volunteering as an English conversational assistant for the American English Institute-(AEI) that was located in the university. I got into something I knew very little about–helping other's with my weakest college subject…English.
It didn't bother me though. My goal was to improve their English "conversational" skills and also to learn more about other cultures and languages.
It became one of the most rememberable experiences in my life. Within a few years, I ended up meeting and conversing with a few hundred international students. From that time forward, over 90% of my friends were international students. We hung out during lunch time, went out for dinner, and went to parties together. I also had the opportunity to travel to Japan for the first time as a result of these wonderful relationships.
Well, what does this have to do with James Hogan's Become an English Language Conversation Tutor book?
I wish that I had this valuable resource back then. I didn't know anything about being a conversational tutor at the time. All I did was have conversations in an unstructured manner. I'm sure that the practice of speaking English helped improve my students skills, but using James Hogan's book could have accelerated the learning process.
Not only does James offer his whole ESL lesson plan, he also educates you on how to build a successful business.
I was thinking that James would just mention the traditional ways of marketing a business (classified ads, bulletin posts, flyers, etc.). Surprisingly, James even goes into marketing your English tutoring business online. Besides just building a website, he even goes in to pay-per-click online advertising that you could do through Google Adwords. He supplies a wealth of other reliable resources that are readily available to you.
On another note, if you're in a relationship with somebody from abroad, James' book could help you as well. One of the most important things in a relationship is communication. I've had many American friends that get into relationships with women where English is their second (or more) language. From what I've seen, most American's aren't familiar with the culture or the language of the foreign women that their dating.
To make things worse, the communication within the relationship isn't going so well. If your in a similar situation, you could learn how to speak your significant other's language, or visa versa. Although this could help boost communication, there's a large learning curve. Even though James' book wasn't made for foreign relationships, his experiences and ideas on "What Makes a Good ESL Tutor" can help you understand the patience and other characteristics that can drastically improve communication.
For an eBook, James also has organized the book in a highly professional manner. It's not so common that you'll see an eBook that is up to professional grade. Many eBooks don't even have indexes. James Hogan has structured all of the material in a highly intuitive manner. Besides just learning from his eBook, it's a great resource that you can go through and easily find the information you need.
There was something about the book that I was expecting but didn't find. I was hoping that James would have a section for tutoring overseas. Emailing James a few times, I knew that he had a lot of experience travelling and teaching many students throughout Asia. I really enjoy travelling and the thought of going to another country to teach English has crossed my mind a few times in the past. James didn't cover the topic directly, but he did offer resources on the subject.
So whether you want to start an English tutoring business or improve others (as well as your) communications skills, I give the highest recommendation for James Hogan's Become an English Language Conversation Tutor book.
